What is Track Lighting?

Track lighting is a great modern invention that allows you to install a series of lights that can point in a variety of directions in order to highlight and feature different areas of your room without blanketing the entire room in excess light. As is sometimes stated by decorators, "if you light everything you actually light nothing." What they mean is that when you bathe the entire room in the most amount of light possible you're not bringing focus to any of your best areas. You're making them all disappear instead of featuring certain areas at certain times.

This kind of lighting is different. As you'd expect the lights are connected together by a track of sorts, and hung on the ceiling. Most are in a straight line, but more modern styles are curved, or even bend in corners, depending on what you need and the area in which you are installing it. Each light functions seperately, although they are turned on together with a single switch. Once installed you can point each light to shine in a different direction giving focus to your most beautiful areas or in order to highlight a certain decoration such as a corner tree or even a new painting.

New homes and recently remodeled homes almost always have tracking lights being used somewhere. Using track lights in the kitchen is becoming very popular as it can greatly enhance the atmosphere of this popular room and allow you to focus more light on your cooking area than you'd normally get from standard canister lights or even lamps.

Track lighting is excessively difficult to install, and if you're already experienced with regular lights then this won't be hard for you. The track lighting kits come with instructions and as long as you follow them correctly you should be fine. Consult your local electrician or experience clerk at a home improvement store if you have questions. Electricity is not something to play with so be sure you are running wires that aren't hot (or live)  to avoid possible electric shock.
